Caption GERMAN P.O.W. BUILT MODEL OF A FOCKE WULF CONDOR WITH SWASTIKA, AT MURCHISON 13 POW GROUP C1940'S
Description THIS MODEL WAS BUILT BY EX-LUFTHANSA AIRCREW WHO WERE ENLISTED IN THE LUFTWAFFE AND CAPTURED IN THE MIDDLE EAST. THEY WERE INTERNED AT MURCHISON IN CENTRAL VICTORIA IN THE 1940?s AND WERE KNOWN AS THE MURCHISON 13 P.O.W. GROUP. THIS TYPE OF AEROPLANE WAS USED TO FLY THE FUHRER AND TOP LEVEL DIPLOMATS AND OFFICERS.
THE COMMANDER OF THE CAMP AT THAT TIME WANTED TO KEEP THE MODEL FOR HIMSELF BUT WHEN THE GERMANS REFUSED TO HAND IT OVER THEY WERE TOLD THAT IF THEY DID NOT COMPLY THAT IT WOULD BE DESTROYED. IN ORDER TO SAVE THE MODEL, GEORGE CAMPBELL (ONE OF THE AUSTRALIAN GUARDS) ARRANGED TO HAVE IT SMUGGLED OUT OF THE CAMP IN AN AMBULANCE (THE ONLY VEHICLE ALLOWED ACCESS TO THE CAMP).
THE MODEL ENDED UP AT GEORGE CAMPBELL?S SISTER?S HOUSE IN NORTHCOTE (MELBOURNE) UNTIL THE END OF W.W.2.
THERE HAVE ONLY BEEN TWO OWNERS SINCE GEORGE CAMPBELL AND HUNTERS AND COLLECTORS ANTIQUES ARE NOW THE PRESENT CARETAKERS OF THIS RARE P.O.W.ART.
1. THE MODEL HAS A PASSENGER DOOR WHICH OPENS AND CLOSES WITH A WORKING LATCH.
2. TURNING THE 2 INSIDE PROPELLORS ANTI CLOCKWISE WILL LOWER THE LANDING GEAR UNDER EACH WING.
3. UNDER THE COCKPIT COVER(REMOVABLE) THERE ARE CONTROLS WHICH LOWER THE REAR LANDING WHEEL, THE STEERING WHEEL MOVES THE FLAPS ON THE TAIL AND ALSO THE FLAPS ON THE WINGS.
4. THE BASE WAS MADE BY THE P.O.W.'S AND IS OF AUSTRALIAN CYPRESS WITH A PLAQUE LATER APPLIED BY GEORGE CAMPBELL.
